The benefits of swimming

If you're handicapped like me, it can be pretty hard to get exercise. Sure, you can lift weights or play wheelchair basketball but those are arm exercises. While those are good, it's important to exercise your legs if you are able. Problem is, gravity is not your friend if you have a disability that impairs your balance. Furthermore, the average piece of leg exercise equipment at the CSU Rec Center was built for those who already had strong legs to start with. And while ODS and the Rec Center are working on getting the equipment, may I suggest hitting the pool?

Swimming is one of the best exercises you can do. It exercises your entire body at the same time. It also builds your stamina so if you are going into something like wheelchair basketball, it'll help. The best part is, you don't have to worry about falling on your head or dropping weights on your foot. Learning to swim does take some practice though but once you master it, it's great. Gravity becomes a non issue so you can do more exercising and less hurting yourself.

Now bear in mind I'm not a doctor. You'll have to check with them. If they do give you the go ahead, odds are your hospital has a swim therapy program. They might also know of places in the area who do adapted swim lessons. If you do know how to swim, the Rec Center has a lift and a ramp to help you in the instructional pool. You may want to call ahead though. There is also the Aqua Inclusive Program on Mon. from 10-11.
